Online Therapy for Military Families in San Diego: Continuity of Care Through Every PCS
San Diego has one of the largest military populations in the country, and military families here face a version of the mental health access problem that civilian advice rarely addresses. The issue is not only finding care. It is keeping it.
A course of therapy that was working ends when orders come through. The next duty station means a new provider, a new waitlist, and telling your whole history to a stranger again. Many families simply stop after the second or third restart.
Why Continuity Matters More Than People Realize
Therapy is not a series of interchangeable appointments. It works through a relationship that builds over time, and the depth of that relationship is what makes the difficult material reachable. Restarting resets you to the beginning of that process.
For someone working on trauma in particular, the early sessions are largely about establishing enough safety to approach it at all. Having to rebuild that three times means possibly never getting to the work itself.
What Telehealth Changes for a PCS Within California
A therapist licensed in California can see clients anywhere in the state. So if you move from San Diego to Sacramento, Monterey, or anywhere else in California, you keep your therapist and your progress. No new waitlist, no new intake, no repeating your history.
This is a genuine and important limit worth stating plainly: licensure is state by state. If your next station is out of state, a California-licensed therapist generally cannot continue treating you there. Ask about this directly rather than assuming, and plan the handoff before you move rather than after.
[VERIFY: whether any interstate compact provisions currently apply to the client’s clinicians. Do not imply cross-state coverage without confirming.]
Deployment: Working Through It Rather Than Pausing
Deployment separates a family without pausing what the family is dealing with. In many ways it intensifies it. Video sessions mean:
- The at-home spouse can continue their own therapy through the separation, when support is often most needed and hardest to arrange around solo parenting.
- Children can keep their therapist during a period when a parent is absent, rather than starting with someone new at the worst time.
- Family sessions can include a deployed parent stationed elsewhere in California, so the family works on the transition while it is happening.
- Reintegration can be prepared for rather than improvised. The return home is its own adjustment and it goes better when both partners have thought about it in advance.
Shift Schedules and Duty Hours
Standard clinic hours assume a standard workday. Duty schedules, watch rotations, and hospital shifts do not cooperate.
Being Well Therapy Group schedules from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM seven days a week, which makes an appointment before a shift, after a shift, or on a weekend realistic. When your rotation changes, you move your appointment rather than dropping out.
What Military Families Commonly Bring to Therapy
None of the following is unusual, and all of it is treatable:
- Anticipatory anxiety before a deployment, which often starts months ahead
- Solo-parenting exhaustion during a separation, and the guilt that tends to accompany resentment
- Reintegration friction: two people who each managed independently for months renegotiating how decisions get made
- Children’s responses to transitions, including regression in younger kids and withdrawal or anger in teens
- PTSD and combat-related trauma, which responds to evidence-based treatment
- The identity shift of separating from service, which is a significant transition even when chosen
- Career interruption for spouses, whose own work restarts with every move
Coverage and Access
Being Well Therapy Group accepts most major insurance plans, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and United Healthcare, and provides superbills for out-of-network reimbursement.
[CONFIRM BEFORE PUBLISHING: whether the practice accepts TRICARE. Do not state or imply TRICARE acceptance without confirmation from the client. If not accepted, direct readers to TRICARE’s provider directory and to VA community care as alternatives.]
Veterans should also know that VA mental health care and Vet Centers provide services that are frequently free, and Vet Centers in particular offer readjustment counseling to combat veterans and their families.
